River fails to turn the series around in Brazil

Marcelo Gallardo’s team failed to reach the CONMEBOL Libertadores semifinals: River took the lead in the first half with a header from Maximiliano Salas, but Palmeiras prevailed after the break.
Barely into the match, the home side threatened Franco Armani with a long-range effort from Joaquín Piquerez. River quickly responded with a precise free kick from Juan Quintero and a well-placed header from Salas to make it 1-0 in São Paulo.
Toward the end of the first half, Armani came up big again to stop a header from Murilo, and River nearly doubled the lead when Kevin Castaño missed a clear chance after a fine team move. In the second half, Palmeiras drew level through Vitor Roque.
Gallardo’s men quickly pushed back: Salas nearly scored, Santiago Lencina tried from outside the box, and Miguel Borja forced danger with a thunderous left-footed shot. On a quick break, Marcos Acuña conceded a penalty, which José López converted for 2-1 before striking again to make it 3-1.
