River falls short against Inter in Club World Cup

Marcelo Gallardo’s team fell 2-0 and didn’t qualify for the round of 16 in the tournament held in the US.
River came out determined from the start, kept control of the ball, pressed constantly high up the pitch, and started threatening the Italian goal through Franco Mastantuono, who created three scoring opportunities. Inter posed little threat to Franco Armani, apart from the occasional run down the wings and a long-range effort.
In the second half, River also had a chance from a Mastantuono free kick, but Inter began to push forward and tested Armani on multiple occasions. Before Lucas Martínez Quarta was sent off, Facundo Colidio had a clear chance after a cross from Manuel Lanzini. Inter took the lead through Francesco Esposito and doubled it in the final minutes thanks to Alessandro Bastoni.
Despite a strong start with a 3-1 win over Urawa Red Diamonds and a goalless draw with Monterrey, Marcelo Gallardo’s team couldn’t secure a spot in the round of 16.
