Draw against Independiente

River Plate was held to a goalless draw by Independiente this Saturday, August 9, in Avellaneda, in the Torneo Clausura. This result keeps Marcelo Gallardo’s squad atop its group, with two wins and two draws in the four matchdays played so far.
There were clear chances for both teams in the first half: the host threatened through Santiago Montiel and Facundo Zabala, while River answered with a slick passing move and a long-range effort by Matías Galarza that missed the target. Meanwhile, Franco Armani grew more confident in dealing with attempts from Matías Abaldo and Walter Mazzantti.
In the second half, River had another good chance through Galarza, following a combination between Miguel Borja and Facundo Colidio. However, Independiente’s efforts were thwarted by Armani, who continued to make key saves against Luciano Cabral and Montiel. Late in the game, Borja unleashed a right-footed shot that flew over Rodrigo Rey’s goal.
The team led by Gallardo will soon start looking ahead to Thursday’s visit to Libertad in Paraguay for the first leg of the CONMEBOL Libertadores round of 16.
