On Thursday, August 14, Marcelo Gallardo’s team played to a 0-0 draw in Asunción in the first leg of the CONMEBOL Libertadores round of 16. The second leg will take place next week at the Mâs Monumental.

River started well in the first half, creating two chances through Miguel Borja and Gonzalo Montiel. However, the home side forced two great saves from Franco Armani—first from a long-range shot and then from a left-footed strike by Hugo Fernández. Before the break, Facundo Colidio had his opportunity with a well-placed right-footed shot and a promising team move that couldn’t be finished off with a cut-back from Montiel.

The second half was almost entirely dominated by River, thanks to the impactful entries of Ignacio Fernández and Juan Quintero. Both midfielders played key roles, creating the clearest chances for River and turning goalkeeper Martín Silva into one of the standout performers of the night in Asunción.

The final match of the series will take place next Thursday at home, but before that, River will host Godoy Cruz this Sunday for another round of the Torneo Clausura.
