River thrashes Godoy Cruz at the Mâs Monumental

Marcelo Gallardo’s team defeated the Mendoza side 4-2 on Matchday 5 of the Torneo Clausura, remaining top of the group and unbeaten. Sebastián Driussi and Giuliano Galoppo each scored a brace.
Back in front of its home crowd, River Plate delivered in the best way: following an emotional week due to the CONMEBOL Libertadores round of 16 and the draw in Asunción, the team secured a key win to stay atop the standings as the lone leader.
The first half was full of action, with five goals in total: Sebastián Driussi opened the scoring with a great strike from outside the box. The visitors equalized through Ignacio Auzmendi, but River took the lead again with a close-range finish by Giuliano Galoppo, who capitalized on a rebound off Franco Petroli from a shot by Bautista Dadín.
Godoy Cruz drew level once again with a penalty from Auzmendi, but just before halftime, Galoppo rose over the defense to head home and put River up 3-2. A few minutes into the second half, Driussi reacted quickly to a loose ball and scored with a delicate touch to extend the lead to 4-2.
El Millonario now sits on 11 points in the championship and turns its focus to Thursday’s CONMEBOL Libertadores home leg against Libertad, with the goal of reaching the quarterfinals. As for the domestic tournament, the team will play again on Monday, August 25, away to Lanús.
